Position Synopsis
The Physician Assistant in Undersea Medicine will provide comprehensive services, continuity of care and stable access for active duty service members especially those who are submarine, dive, nuclear and radiation worker qualified, Naval Submarine School students and other eligible patients. Within the scope of his/her privileges and credentials, the incumbent will provide diagnostic and treatment services for active duty military personnel, perform history and physical examinations of patients eligible for care; generate a diagnosis and treatment plan consistent with the presenting complaint. Order and interpret laboratory data, radiographic images, electrocardiographs, and other diagnostic studies as appropriate. Counsel patients on various interventions, thoroughly explain the diagnosis, treatment regimen and provide follow-up visits as appropriate. Identify more complicated cases and complete all information necessary to initiate consultation with the appropriate specialist. Document all information in an Electronic Health Record and include appropriate information to substantiate accurate clinical coding information. Provide appropriate consultation to the patient's command concerning the patient's condition, disposition and duty status/fitness for duty. Follow HIPAA guidance. Perform general occupational and special physical examinations in accordance with current instructions. Direct support personnel in the clinic assigned during the performance of clinical care or related administrative tasks. Provide comprehensive counseling to patients regarding disease prevention and promote a healthy lifestyle. Oversees and coordinates care requirements for and completes all Limited Duty and Physical Evaluation Boards on all active duty members who are designated or qualified in submarine, dive, nuclear and/or radiation worker duties and are in a Limited Duty (105) status. Assist in training of staff personnel as directed.
The incumbent must possess the knowledge and clinical skills required to diagnose, treat, and refer the broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries presenting to the Undersea Medicine Clinic. Must be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program approved by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association. The individual will be required to possess a Baccalaureate Degree in a related field and certification by the National Commission on Certifications of Physician Assistants. Be thoroughly knowledgeable in, understand and apply all medical fitness criteria for Submarine duty, Nuclear Field Duty, Ionizing Radiation Worker duty, Diving duty and other special community criteria as outline in the Manual of the Medical Department (NAVMED P-117), the radiation Health Protection Manual (NAVMED P-5055), COMSUBFORINST 600 and other pertinent instructions and documents. Have knowledge of the Department of the Navy (DON) Disability Evaluation Manual (SECNAVINST 1850.4E). The individual must possess knowledge in preventive health care. Must have unlimited privileges to practice medicine independently and be credentialed through the NHCNE Executive Committee of the Medical Staff. Must be BCLS certified and maintain all required CME.
